Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2009
To all the chemistry students/chemistry-to-be-students, I will be touching on these topics in the next few posts, which i hope you will find informative.
“Why study Chemistry?”
“How to do well in IGCSE/O level Chemistry”
“Chemistry workshop(s) for Cambridge IGCSE/O levels in 2009”
Why study Chemistry?
This, I have a lot to share because I have studied Chemistry from Cambridge O level to the Masters level; I have also taught many Chemistry students at the BMC Academy and St. Francis Academy in Singapore as well as private tuitions. On retrospect, I dedicate this post to Mr. Chong (who has helped me in my Chemistry A levels, Sunway College); Prof Igor Novak, Prof Andy Hor and Prof Vivian Yam (who have helped me in my Bachelor Degree with Merit, National University of Singapore and University of Hong Kong); Dr. Stachulski and Dr. Greeves (who have helped me in my Master Degree with Distinction, University of Liverpool). All of whom I have the deepest gratitude for their teaching and admiration for their passion in Chemistry. Chemistry is for life, indeed for them!
Reading Chemistry at O level helps very much in learning difficult concept and applying it to practice. If one can do well in Chemistry, you can do well in any subject (quote me). Simply because, if you can understand Chemistry and able to answer questions well. You have mastered the king of all subjects, Chemistry and the rest is simply stamp collecting (You can tell I am Chemistry biased!)
First of all, when you pick up an O level Chemistry book, you have almost certainly the attitude to learn and better yourself. When you pursue Chemistry into higher level, your attitude towards knowledge seeking improves and with it comes application to problems. Above all, your analytical skills are enhanced whilst doing your theoretical questions and practical experiments. Hence, your attitude towards learning will be greatly enhanced, because you are challenged when understanding difficult chemistry concepts.
Secondly, a lot of employers are looking for candidates with problem solving, analytical skills and the potential ability to pick up knowledge, with it comes competency in the role. As a Chemistry student, you can demonstrate all these abilities by demonstrating your learning attitude towards Chemistry; how you have applied knowledge to problem solving in the examinations, and gained analytical skills while carrying out practical experiments.
Above all, consider the career options that a chemistry graduate has. The options are wider than you can ever imagine. You can be a teacher, chemist, investment consultant or any role that fits your high ability to learn and apply, analytical skills and bachelor qualification. This, I can share with confidence because I have the fortune to learn and apply my role well in various line of work when I was in Singapore, Hong Kong, United Kingdom besides Malaysia.
At Honsbridge Academy, in combination with positive attitude towards learning and sound academic background, you will receive our full support to making chemistry concepts easy to understand. Most importantly, we can help you score well in your examination. This applies to all available subjects at Honsbridge Academy.
Why IGCSE/O Level qualifications in Malaysia?
Why Cambridge International GCSE/O level qualifications in Malaysia?
In this modern times and age, the drive to build on your knowledge and qualification is great. This is because it is the basis for your career or business start up, with it comes financial independence and a quality lifestyle. In Malaysia, SPM or GCE O level are both widely accepted as the minimum qualification for entry level job position or academic progression. It is no wonder, the British Council Malaysia offers private candidates to sit for IGCSE or O level examinations locally.
The General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level), or GCE O Level, is a secondary-level academic qualification that examinations boards in the United Kingdom confer to students. The O Levels aims to prepare students who are 14-16years old for their academic progression (such as GCE Advanced and Advanced Subsidiary Level study, SAM or CPU) and equip them with the skills necessary for employment.
In many countries such as Hong Kong, Parkistan, India, Nepal, Malta, Singapore and Sri-Lanka, O level is the national school-leaving examination.
O Level grading is on a five-point scale (A–E). Universities in many countries, including Canada and the USA, will admit students on the basis of their O Level performances alone.
Grade C in O Level English Language satisfies the English proficiency requirements of many universities in the UK and other English speaking countries.
At Honsbridge Academy (@HA), our dynamic teachers will provide you the IGCSE/O level tuition and help you to do well in your Cambridge IGCSE/O levels. Besides the academic skills, we will train you on other important soft skills e.g. communication and presentation skills in the English Language to prepare you for employment or academic progression.

What Cambridge IGCSE/O level subjects could you choose?
Students typically need five IGCSE/O level exams at grades A* to C to be sure of a place in the higher education institution. At the end of the IGCSE/O level tuition, students can enter a local college to begin studying for A-levels, International Baccalaureate (IB), South Australian Matriculation (SAM) or Canadian Pre University (CPU).
Consider how well you can cope with particular subjects, because your IGCSE/O level performance can affect your higher education success. For instance, if all your grades are Cs, you will find taking four GCE A levels is a major challenge. On the other hand, if you have not chosen O level Chemistry or Physics, it is almost impossible to take on GCE A level Chemistry or Physics because you have not gotten the basics right first. At the very least, to be sure of a place in higher education, students need to choose five subjects that they will aim to score at least a grade C.
One way to assess how well you can cope with particular subjects is by reviewing your historical results in the particular subjects. In addition, if you have read the subjects e.g. Chemistry and Physics before you are likely to cope better than those who have not learnt these subjects. Last and not the least is if you are prepared to work extra hard. Determination and the ability to work hard are the main criteria.
Hence, you may consider the subjects that you can enjoy and perform well, finally the subject combinations that will support your studies at higher education.
At Honsbridge Academy, all students take exams in:
English
Maths
Students then choose a further three subjects from the general or science sets:

What is GCSE, IGCSE and O Level in Malaysia context?
For a very long time, the Education Ministry of Malaysia has recognised the importance of English language in higher education. Hence, the UPSR and SPM examinations have now included English as the written scripts in Maths and Science examinations. This is a fine example of meeting the changing needs of students today.
GCSE, IGCSE and GCE O level/Cambridge International O level are UK qualifications equivalent to SPM qualifications. For further information on these qualifications, please look it up on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GCSE .These courses are taught in the English language as such the examinations use the English scripts only. We can consider GCSE, IGCSE and GCE O level as very valuable qualifications, because they are recognised worldwide as the basic admission requirement to higher education.
As part of my continuous quest for learning, my education and career pathways have taken me abroad besides my home, Malaysia. Therefore, I can share with you the various providers of these valuable educations.
1. In UK, GCSE is available with several examination boards. e.g. Edexcel, OCR and AQA.
2. In Singapore secondary schools, private schools and tuition centres, GCE O level is available with Cambridge International Examination (CIE) board.
3. In Malaysia international schools e.g. Garden International School, Alice Smith International School and several others, IGCSE and GCE O level are available with CIE board or Edexcel.
In Malaysia, the majority of students follow the national education curriculum, SPM pathway to higher education. There are some students whose parents can afford the very high school fees and living expenses at the above mentioned schools, these students shall follow the international education curriculum. I am one of many who have studied GCE O levels in Singapore, Cedar Girls’ Secondary School. When I look back, I always thank my parents who have provided me an education that has improved my life learning skills.
