FUN learning with Chemistry experiments

Image
Dear readers, Recently on the 17 Feb, I had the chance to involve students in conducting their own chemistry experiments in the laboratory. Apart from having fun and applying key concepts in the topic on Rates of Reaction. The safe use of chemicals such as using secondary containment and safety spectacles; data recording in the chemistry report were discussed. This was part of bringing out the discipline required of students to do higher science. Readers of Chemistry will learn that the speed of reaction depends on five major factors. The examination questions base on this key concept are in fact easy to score. Student should understand in terms of molecular movement with respect to: 1. Temperature of the reaction mixture 2. The surface area of the reactants 3. The pressure of gaseous reactants 4. Presence of catalyst 5. Concentration of the reactants In this investigation, the students namely Syaqil, Faheem and Isaac (first left, middle and right) have charged equal volume of Vinegar ...

O Level Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics Programme

Calling all Cambridge O Level Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics Students Enrichment Programme Intake: April 2010 Leading to Nov 2010 O Level Examination Period: April to Oct 2010 (Academic term applies) Duration per subject: Two hours weekly We lay special emphasis on making Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics topics that are found most difficult easy to understand for our students. The tuition normally involves revision of key concepts in each topic, discussion of popular Cambridge exam questions and solutions. The students will also learn how to avoid making common mistakes and therefore get the grades that they truly deserve. In addition, the student may also benefit from one to one discussion with the teacher regarding their school homework. For further details for timetable and scheme of work on Physics, Chemistry and Maths, please contact us . Let's hear what students have to say about us on their leap to academic success at Honsbridge. For our teachers, it ha...

IGCSE/O level Chemistry

How to do well in IGCSE/O level Chemistry? Following on from "Why study Chemistry?", I will attempt to share with all young chemists- want-to-be some key must- know concepts . Know your periodic table, there is a wealth of information that you can get simply by referring to the periodic table. The elements in their respective Group have the same number of outermost electrons as their Group number. e.g. Group V elements will have 5 valence electrons. Whereas the elements in their respective Period have the same number of electronic shells as their Period number. e.g. Al is in Group III and in Period 3, therefore it has three electronic shells and three valence electrons. The Group number of the element also suggests how many more or less electrons that the element needs to gain or loose to become as stable as the Group VIII elements. e.g. Since Br is in Group VII, it has 7 valence electrons, to become stable like Group VIII elements, it needs to gain 1 more electron...
