Know your periodic table, there is a wealth of information that you can get simply by referring to the periodic table. The elements in their respective Group have the same number of outermost electrons as their Group number. e.g. Group V elements will have 5 valence electrons. Whereas the elements in their respective Period have the same number of electronic shells as their Period number. e.g. Al is in Group III and in Period 3, therefore it has three electronic shells and three valence electrons.
